Our book club chose this as our selection a while back and while I was hesitant at first (they tend to choose very polite horror) I was happily surprised by this. This is pretty refined stuff... and bears closer reading than the average Stephen King page-turner.
In discussions afterward a person mentioned that she didn't see why a particular tale was often classified as a 'ghost story' when no one in the story was dead... no spooks in sight. But I think that illustrates why I appreciated these stories so much... they really are subtle in their demeanor... and in that story in question the haunting is very much in force... though it might not be as readily apparent or jump out and yell 'BOO!!!'.
These stories require a bit more patience and attention but they really do pay off.

The Collected Stories of Elizabeth Bowen Elizabeth Bowen 9781400096565 Books Reviews

elizabeth bowen's stories are well crafted. reading them (for me... i was born in 1974) is like peeking into the drawing room of a time long gone and now crystallised on the page. i gave the book 4 stars instead of five, because while some of the stories are real gems, others fell flat to me. this was my first experience with her work, and 760 odd pages of short stories was a lot of stories!
i would recommend, unless you just want to read a few stories at a time, (the book is broken up into decades and then pre and post war sections)or you are already a huge fan, to start out with a smaller collection of her work. then again, why not pay a few extra dollars and get them all at once?
i escpecially recommend the stories of the twenties and thirties, they really are delightful... the ghosts and murderessess inhabiting some of them are intriguing, there's a flavour to her work you simply don't find in newer fiction. reading her work was like entering another time zone, quite interesting stuff!
Elizabeth Bowen is one of the best writers I've read - either for fun, or in English courses. Her stories are complex and sometimes really strange and interesting, with an understated but absorbing style.
A superb volume and in great condition -- it doesn't seem to have been used before.
very good book
Elizabeth Bowen may not be known by many but her writing is a delight. She is in a special class of writers for me including the writers Elizabeth Taylor and Penelope Lively. If you like descriptive writing, you will certainly enjoy this collection.
Considered one of the greatest short story writer - I am told - (by the professor who assigned it) - these are masterful descriptions. They immediately put you in a place with details so exquisite that you can hear and smell your surroundings. Her most famous short story is included - The Demon Lover.
This is a reread for me. I have admired Elizabeth Bowen for many years. Her stories get to the heart of human nature, are tautly written, and stimulate the reader's imagination.
